A conductor, composer and teacher Alexander Zemlinsky was the head of the opera of the New German Theatre in Prague from 1911 to 1927 and led the theatre to many international successes. He expanded its repertoire and gave world premieres of many works, such as Arnold Schönberg's monodrama Erwartung, which will be performed again at the State Opera in November 2021.

During his artistic leadership, he succeeded in bringing to Prague outstanding artists of his time, including Maria Hussa, Paul Pella, Friedrich Schorr, Leo Slezak, Richard Tauber and Lotte Lehmann. In 1933 Zemlinsky had to flee Berlin, where he was working at the time, first to Vienna and then to the United States.

Join us for the "parade" of the composer's music and learn more about his life. Browse the programme for the Zemlinsky 150 Festival, which will take place from 8-10 October.
